Today's show features the first of a two part reading of The Willows by Algernon Blackwood. First published in 1907, The Willows has the distinction of being considered by H.P. Lovecraft as the finest supernatural tale in English literature. We'll hear the first half of the story today, and finish up on the next episode.

Based on Dorothy MacArdle's 1942 novel Uneasy Freehold, The Uninvited hit the big screen in 1944. We'll hear the Screen Directors Playhouse version that originally aired November 18, 1949.

On this episode of Vintage Horror Radio, we’ll hear the radio adaptation of Algeron Blackwood’s story Keeping His Promise. The original short story was first published in 1906, and included in the collection The Empty House And Other Ghost Stories. This radio version was produced for the series Haunted.

We're taking care of a request I got some time ago with today's show. From Favorite Story we'll hear their adaptation of The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow. This radio version is based on Washington Irving's story first published in 1820, and one of few early examples of American fiction still read today. Favorite Story aired their version May 29, 1948.

Our Halloween programming ends this week with another short story by Edgar Allan Poe. Berenice was first published in 1835 in the Southern Literary Messenger, and was the cause for many letters to their editor regarding the violence of the story. We'll hear a radio adaptation done by the CBS Radio Mystery Theater.

This week we continue our Edgar Allan Poe radio adaptations with The Fall Of The House Of Usher. This story was first published in Burton's Gentleman's Magazine in 1839, then again a year later in the collection Tales Of The Grotesque And Arabesque. We heard a version from Escape a few shows back, this time it's from NBC Short Story.

We continue our October exploration of Edgar Allan Poe on radio this week. We'll hear The Imp Of The Perverse, a short story first published in Graham's Magazine in the July 1845 issue. A revised version would later be published in a gift book titled May-Flower in 1846. This radio adaptation was done by The Black Mass, and first aired July 29, 1964.
